Technical messages
WhatsApp sometimes generates messages when something happens in a chat, e.g. if somebody leaves a group. These messages came in different languages in the chats that were sent in, so we decided to encode them. We also encoded messages in which we made changes, e.g. if we removed media files.
The following codes exist in the corpus in the field "word":
- mediaQremoved: for media that we removed
- emptyQmsg: an empty message
- encryptedQmsg: some informants encrypted their messages
- systemQspk53: says very generally, that speaker 53 did something, e.g. changed the title, joined the group etc.
If you want more information about what speaker 53 did in the above example, you have to query the field msg_type, which knows the following options:
- actionQiconDEL: the avatar was deleted
- actionQiconUPD: the avatar was changed
- actionQsubjUPD: the name of a group was updated
- actionQuerIN: a speaker was added to a group
- actionQuserOUT: a speaker was removed or removed themselves
- actionQuserREM: Meta text about a speaker in a group chat
The other options in this field are self-explanatory or mentioned above: content, encrypted, media, no consent
